Which states tax business personal property? 2026 map

A dated table of states we checked against official sources: whether business equipment is taxed, the small-business threshold, the form and the deadline, and what Business Property Desk covers.

By Yann LephayPublished · Last updated

Summary

Our answer: most states still tax business equipment, furniture and computers, but four we verified do not tax business personal property at all: Illinois (abolished in 1979), New York (no personal property tax), Ohio (phased out by tax year 2009) and Wisconsin (exempt from assessments as of January 1, 2024). In the states that tax it, the question that decides your year is the threshold: Texas exempts $125,000 per location, Arizona $500,000, Indiana everything under $2,000,000 of cost per county, Georgia $20,000, Florida $25,000. Business Property Desk prepares packets only for Texas, Fairfax County (Virginia) and Multnomah County (Oregon) renewals.

No business personal property tax in Illinois, New York, Ohio or Wisconsin; elsewhere the threshold decides whether you owe anything, and you often still file once to claim it.

Our verdict

Find your state below, then check the threshold before anything else. Under it, file whatever the county needs to record the exemption, often once, and do not pay anyone. Over it, file the county form by the deadline. Use our packet only in Texas, Fairfax County or for a Multnomah renewal.

Who this page is for, and who it is not for

For: owners of small businesses with office equipment, furniture, computers or tools at one location who want to know whether their state asks for a return. Not for: vehicles, leased-out equipment, manufacturers with special schedules, and multi-state businesses, which need each county's rules.

States we checked, October 2026

Each row comes from a state or county source consulted on October 27, 2026. A state missing from the table is not a state without the tax: we publish only what we could verify.

What the threshold does, and what it does not do

A threshold removes the tax, not always the paperwork. Texas asks for a one-time certification, Florida grants its $25,000 exemption to owners who file an initial DR-405, Oregon asks owners below its cancellation threshold to keep filing a short return, and Gwinnett County (Georgia) says property under $20,000 must still be returned. See our exemptions page for each state's rule.

Where Business Property Desk fits

We prepare a $79 packet in three places: Texas renditions above $125,000 at one location, Fairfax County furniture and computer equipment, and Multnomah County renewals with an existing account. Everywhere else, the county form is the answer; our free asset register template is the part that transfers.

Common questions

Which states do not tax business personal property?

Among the states we checked against official sources: Illinois (business personal property taxes abolished, replaced in 1979 by the personal property replacement tax on business income), New York (no personal property tax), Ohio (general business tangible personal property exempt from tax year 2009) and Wisconsin (exempt from assessments as of January 1, 2024, under 2023 Wisconsin Act 12). Other states are often cited; we list only those we verified.

Does Texas tax business personal property?

Yes, but since January 1, 2026 the first $125,000 of appraised value per location is exempt. At or under it, you file a one-time certification on Form 50-144 instead of a rendition.

Do I owe this tax on fully depreciated equipment?

Often yes. Oregon's 2026 return, for example, lists expensed items and items fully depreciated for federal purposes as taxable. Federal depreciation does not remove property from a local list.

Can Business Property Desk prepare my Georgia, Florida or California return?

No. The packet covers Texas, Fairfax County and Multnomah County renewals only. Use the county form; our free asset register template helps you build the list.
